One of four elementary sites in the Holy Family Catholic School system, Holy Ghost School serves the downtown Dubuque area with a preschool through grade 5 program.
To meet the needs of all learners, we utilize differentiated instruction in all classrooms. Math contracts, on-line programs, and class projects are used for those students who are “ready to go on” and small group work, one-on-one assistance or alternative curriculums are used for those needing additional assistance.
The four pillars of Catholic education are incorporated into daily life: service, community, worship and message. Service is a tradition in Catholic Schools, and throughout the year, our students and staff participate in numerous service projects. We worship together weekly at Mass and at prayer services during Advent and Lent. We celebrate community through a variety of after school activities offered by our parent association. Our character education program and regular priest and deacon visits focus on Christian values and send a strong message about the importance of good character and decision making.
Through a partnership with Loras College in Dubuque, our campus participates in the Loras for Literacy initiative. This program provides interactive learning opportunities through laptop computers, mimio boards, and projectors in our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classrooms. We realize that students need to become 21st century learners and must develop technology proficiencies as well as collaborative and problem solving skills.
An outstanding program we offer is the BOOST after school mentoring program which offers academic support for many of our students. This program is exclusive to our campus, and community members volunteer one, two or three afternoons a week to mentor students after school. In its third year of operation, approximately thirty students are supported spiritually, academically, and morally.
